Solitude

Solitude: Jesus did it. And Jesus taught us.
Matthew 14:23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone…Mark 6:31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Luke 4:42 At daybreak Jesus went out to a solitary place. Luke 5:16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. After His baptism, Jesus spent forty days in solitude preparing for His public ministry (Matthew 4:1–11). After His cousin John the Baptist had his head cut off, Jesus spent time alone to mourn (Matthew 14:12–13). Jesus used solitude for intense prayer (Matthew 14:23; Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16). He used solitude to rest after a hard day of work (Mark 6:31). He used solitude to see His Father’s will before choosing His twelve disciples (Luke 6:12). Knowing He was going to be crucified soon, Jesus went to the garden alone. (Mark 26:36–46).

God meets us in our loneliness. God meets us in our solitude.
My grandfather had a favorite hymn, and I'll never forget our family singing this hymn together around his bed after He passed away and entered the presence of God. The words were:

"I come to the garden alone,
 while the dew is still on the roses.
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
the Son of God discloses.

And He walks with me,
and He talks with me,
and He tells me I am His own;
and the joy we share as we tarry there,
none other has ever known.

I`d stay in the garden with Himm
though the night around me be falling,
but He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.
